Dental Care Tips for Flu Season

Cold and flu season are in full swing. You may not think that your oral health can be affected by cold and flu but they can. Here are some tips for keeping your mouth healthy during sickness.

  • Brush your teeth. When you feel icky, brushing your teeth may not be top of mind, but don’t forget about your oral health care routine. Make sure to brush at least twice a day for two minutes or more.
  • Get a new toothbrush. Bacteria and germs can remain on your brush even after your illness is gone. After being sick make sure to toss and replace your brush.
  • Stay hydrated. Your body needs the extra fluids to fight infection but also this helps with cavity prevention.
  • Choose sugar free. Many cough medications and cough drops have sugar in the them. Make sure to choose remedies with no sugar. When sucking on cough drops, they remain in your mouth for a long time. They can lead to tooth decay and cavities.
